Why HVAC design matters

Most comfort and energy problems start before a system is installed. Equipment sized by rule of thumb is often too big, so it short-cycles, wastes energy and leaves rooms humid. Equipment that is too small runs constantly and still cannot keep up on the hottest and coldest days. Ducts that are not sized for real airflow cause noisy registers, hot and cold rooms, and higher bills.

A proper design avoids all of this. It starts with a Manual J load calculation, then uses Manual S to pick the right equipment and Manual D to size the ducts.

Good design also makes permits easier. Many building departments ask for a load calculation before they approve new HVAC equipment, and most require a REScheck or COMcheck energy code report for new homes, additions and commercial spaces. Getting these documents right the first time keeps inspections on schedule and avoids costly redesigns after the work has started.
