Answers about Manual J, D, S and energy code reports

Whether you are a homeowner replacing a system, a builder preparing a permit package, or a contractor who needs a design fast, these are the questions we hear most. If yours is not here, call us at (540) 717-9304 or send your plans and we will answer it directly.

A Manual J calculation is a room-by-room heating and cooling load analysis performed according to ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) standards. It determines exactly how much heating and cooling capacity your building needs based on its actual construction, orientation, climate zone, and occupancy. This is the foundation for proper HVAC system design.

Manual D (duct design) and Manual S (equipment selection) are needed when you're designing a complete HVAC system—not just sizing equipment. If you're building new, redesigning ductwork, adding to a home, or need permit-ready documentation, you should include D and S with your Manual J. If you're simply replacing existing equipment without changing ductwork, Manual J alone may be sufficient.

Yes. Right Check provides remote HVAC design services available nationwide. Our work is completed remotely using your project plans and documentation, so your location is not a limitation. We adjust all calculations for your specific climate zone, altitude, and local code requirements.

We work with everyone—homeowners, builders, HVAC contractors, and architects. Many homeowners come to us for independent load calculations before purchasing new equipment, ensuring they get properly sized systems regardless of contractor recommendations.

Absolutely. Our calculations and reports are formatted for permit submission and include all documentation typically required by building departments. Our J + D + S package is specifically designed to provide a complete, permit-ready HVAC design package.

We need your floor plans (PDF preferred), building elevations or sections if available, and any relevant construction specifications (insulation values, window schedules, etc.). For existing buildings, photos of the mechanical equipment and ductwork are helpful. We'll let you know if we need additional information after reviewing your submission.

Most projects are completed within 3–7 business days, depending on complexity, project size, and current volume. Rush delivery is available for time-sensitive projects—contact us to discuss your timeline.

Equipment replacement means swapping out your existing HVAC unit for a new one, typically using the existing ductwork. A system redesign involves redesigning the entire HVAC system—including duct sizing, equipment selection, and air distribution. Replacements usually need only Manual J, while redesigns require the full J + D + S package.

Yes. We provide both REScheck (residential) and COMcheck (commercial) energy code compliance reports. These are required for building permit applications in most jurisdictions and verify that your building's envelope, lighting, and mechanical systems meet applicable energy codes.

Low-cost services typically use generic default inputs and minimal review time to produce calculations quickly and cheaply. Right Check brings 30+ years of hands-on HVAC experience to every project. We verify inputs, account for real construction conditions, and design for constructability—not just software output. Our calculations are grounded in real field experience, including hands-on HVAC installation and system performance work.
